My poor little Lily Bean had a rough week last week with three doctor’s visits and three different diagnoses. She is a tough little girl and hung in there as best she could.
Visit 1: After both girls having a cold for a week, I took them to the doctor on Monday morning. Lily had also been running a fever since Friday. I felt that her cold had turned into her typical asthma symptoms, but wanted to make sure she wasn’t developing pneumonia. It was bad enough that I decided to brave taking both girls to the doctor by myself. We left with two prescriptions for antibiotics and instructions to start pulmicort with a nebulizer for a month. If Lily didn’t improve, I was to take her to get a chest x-ray on Wednesday.
Visit 2: Lily stayed about the same most the day Monday, but she complained that her peepee hurt that evening. She then woke up at night screaming that her peepee hurt. Having suffered from chronic UTI’s as a child myself, I had a strong suspicion that she had developed one herself. I took her first thing Tuesday morning. After her understandable inability to peepee in a cup, we had to cath. her. All I will say is that this was an excruciatingly horrible experience. Sure enough, Lily had a pretty severe UTI for which she went on an antibiotic. My poor baby. I hated to see her have to go through this pain and wished more than anything I could take it from her.
Visit 3: Wednesday consisted of lots of TV watching and recovering. Lily was extremely fussy, but I just chalked it up to all that she had been through. Thursday morning, I was really hoping to take Lily to her school Easter egg hunt, but knew that she had to go potty before we left. It took me three hours and lots of coaxing, but she finally went. I was so glad she didn’t have to miss out on more Easter festivities due to being sick. During the lunch she started complaining of her left ear hurting. She’s not one to complain too much of pain and as time went on, I could tell she was in a lot of discomfort. So back to the doctor we go. Poor child was trying to pretend that ear didn’t hurt, because she REALLY did not want to go back to the doctor. Lily hasn’t had an ear infection since she had tubes put in three years ago, so I was thinking a bug had crawled in her ear. Of course, I was wrong and she had a “raging” ear infection in her left ear. Now we had to switch to a new antibiotic that killed ear infections as well as UTI’s. Later that evening, Lily cried out in pain and I later discovered that ear drum had ruptured.
I can’t imagine too many more painful things than catheritization and a ruptured ear drum and my baby had both in one week. I wanted to go to Wal-Mart and buy her every toy they had!
As I said, this was a rather traumatic week for my little girl. She is slowly recovering and on the mend. Here’s hoping for a healthy spring break.
